Eating at our Aunt’s House

On Sunday at noon we were invited by my wife’s aunt in Hà Nội. She cooks really well and prepared a nice meal. See for yourself: salad, cucumber and herbs, green mango, chicken, squid with pineapple and vegetables, chayote, fried eggs “opla”, squids stuffed with minced pork meat, nems and soup. At home in Vietnam there is always a soup with vegetables and maybe also some meat. rice is not shown below but obviously the rice cooker was not far! I also could enjoy tiny glasses of a Vietnamese vodka. This is part of the Russian influence, a few words in the daily language and a wide use of vodka for parties, as far as I can see for now.

The French language has something to do with the eggs in Vietnam:

  • Opla: from the French “oeufs au plat”, fried eggs
  • Oplet: omelette

The table in the living room has a tea set ready to welcome guests. I like those wooden sofas. Not the comfiest, but the carved wood looks beautiful.

After the meal we usually end with drinking tea (in this case not tea but artichoke infusion) and always a lot of fruits.
